Homework 6

Homework 6 is now available on the course website. This will be a 2-week long homework, but please start the theory part early, it relies on the game theoretic concepts that were introduced in my lecture and (hopefully) reinforced through HW5.

We have a competition on this homework - Clickmaniac! You will advertise the Facebook fan page for this course using the advertising framework provided by Facebook. In the next couple of days, we will pick a random member from each Rankmaniac team and grant them administrator access to both the fan page that is being advertised, and the ads account that your team will use to create and manage your ads campaign. You will receive notification emails from Facebook once we do this. Contact Changhong (czhao@caltech.edu) if you feel more than one member of your team needs access, or if you are forming a different team for this assignment.

Your campaigns should run from next Wednesday, so make sure you read and understand what is being asked of you, and start creating your ads before Wednesday. As usual, if you have any questions about the homework, or just want to point out typos, please post them as comments on this post and then the TAs/prof will respond ASAP.

  1. I have added the following students as the users of the ad account CS144 2012:

    Daniel Chen,
    Brian Merlob,
    Laura Conwill,
    Annie Chin,
    Kevin Lo,
    Shayan Doroudi,
    Gustaf Helgesson,
    Daniil Kitchaev,
    Christopher Dudiak,
    Robert Karl,
    Stephen Worlow.

    IMPORTANT:

    1. Please check whether at least one of your rank Maniac group members has been listed above. If not, contact me ASAP.

2.The Group of Michael Burd, Michael Hershleifer and Ramya Korlakai Vinayak: I cannot find any of you on facebook via your caltech email. I have sent a friend request to Ramya. Please approve that request so that I can add you into the ad account by your name.

    3. I also try to add people in the list above as the admins of the page you are to advertise for

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-ideas-behind-the-Web/103185246428488

However the system reminds that only my friends or people who already liked this page can be added as admins. So, please friend me and/or like this page to make sure you will be added.

Again, it is extremely important to understand the HW policy and respect the Honor Code. Good luck!

  2. I see there has been some activity where a campaign was created and scheduled to run right from today (someone from Ricketts, methinks) but was deleted soon after. Please be careful - kindly read the instructions completely before starting to play with the ads account! ALL CAMPAIGNS MUST BE SCHEDULED TO RUN FROM 02/22/12 13:00.

  3. Students, despite our efforts to try and cover all possible scenarios where you might be exposed to the ads of other groups, I just realized that Facebook sends out a notification email every time an ad is approved/disapproved, and this notification contains the image/content of the ad. The rules of the homework extend to this case - you can either disable these notifications by going to the "Settings" section of the ad account (this will disable notifications for your own ads as well), or, you can choose not to open/read the notification emails for ads that are not part of your campaign.

    1. Since the ad/campaign name is not in the notification email subject, one way to implement the second option above is to filter the notification emails by conditioning on the content containing your campaign name... If you discover other methods, please share them here...

    2. The second option might not actually work, since there could be more than one ad in these notification emails and theoretically, these ads could span multiple campaigns. So, please go ahead and disable the approval notifications. You can keep the disapproval notifications on, so that you know when your ad is disapproved - but remember to use a filter to search the content of the email for your campaign name before opening/reading such emails.

  4. I understand the "unique people" and "connections" metrics, but are we being graded on "unique clicks"? or just "clicks" overall? (using the terminology in the Reports tab)

  5. For problem 2, the definition of price of anarchy given in the homework is for one game. Later in the problem, you are asked to think about the price of anarchy of a class of games, for example, in 2(b)(iii), you need to show that the price of anarchy of the class of games (where n=2) is 1.25. For a class of games, the price of anarchy is defined as the maximum price of anarchy over all games in that class - that is, the "worst of the worst".

  6. Since we have too many users for the ad account, the system reminds that I cannot add new users. Sorry for that if you want to be added...

  7. How will unique people reached be calculated at the end of the contest? The Reports tool gives daily totals of unique people, but I'm not sure if adding these up will double-count people who are repeated on different days.

    1. Instead of going to the Reports section, from the main page, if you click on your campaign and go to the page that displays statistics for your campaign alone (with the list of ads), there is an option to select any date range and see the statistics for that range (reach, connections, clicks). These numbers are the ones that will be used at the end.

  8. DEADLINE FOR "CREATING" ADS IS TONIGHT!!! Read the homework problem carefully for more details on what you can and can't do after tonight!

  9. How will the winner of Clickmaniac be determined? Will it be calculated by some form of averaging the ranks in each of the 3 categories?

    1. As the name of the contest indicates, it will be decided based on the number of clicks!

  10. Is there a way to view other people's campaign-wide reach without clicking on their actual campaign page?

    1. I guess not! Well, go ahead and click into other campaigns BUT be careful NOT to click on their ads to see their image/content. You shouldn't have to look beneath the overall campaign stats displayed at the top of that page...

  11. Hello everyone, the TAs campaign is practically over now (we've exhausted our budget for the day already), so you have another day to beat our numbers (if you haven't already)! Good luck ;)

  12. In problem 1, what does the seller's bid do? If the seller wins does he just keep the item (without paying anything)?

    1. You are right. If the seller wins, he just keeps the item and there is no payment.
